Sometimes the hardest part of following God is realizing that doing the right thing does not guarantee the outcome we hoped for.
I think most of us understand obedience when it leads somewhere that makes sense. We pray, try to make wise decisions, treat people well, forgive, stay patient, and do our best to follow what we believe God is asking us to do. Somewhere deep down, though, it can be easy to start believing that if we do all of that correctly, things should eventually work out fairly.
But life does not always happen that way.
Sometimes you can look back at a situation and honestly say, “God, I really tried to do this right,” and still be standing in the middle of something painful.
That can be incredibly confusing.
You can make a decision with good intentions and still lose something important. You can love someone faithfully and still be misunderstood. You can forgive someone and discover that forgiveness does not erase the consequences of what happened. You can take care of yourself and still become sick. You can pray for an answer for months or even years and eventually receive an answer that looks nothing like the one you were asking God for.
Those moments can make us question everything.
We may wonder whether we misunderstood God, whether we made the wrong decision, or even whether He sees what is happening at all.
But obedience was never a contract that gave us control over what happened next.
Following God does not mean we will never experience loss, disappointment, sickness, rejection, or circumstances we never would have chosen for ourselves. Scripture is filled with people who followed God faithfully and still walked through incredibly difficult places.
And maybe that is where faith becomes something deeper than believing God will give us the outcome we want.
Faith becomes trusting Him when we don’t get it.
It becomes saying, “God, I do not understand why this happened. I would have chosen differently. I wish You had answered differently. I wish this road did not hurt so much. But I still believe You are here.”
That does not mean we have to pretend suffering is good. It does not mean we cannot grieve, question, get frustrated, or admit that something feels unfair. God already knows what is in our hearts anyway.
Sometimes faith simply means continuing to walk while carrying questions we cannot answer yet.
Isaiah 43:2 does not tell us that God’s people will never encounter deep water or fire. It tells us what happens when they do: He will be with them.
That changes the promise.
The promise is not, “If you obey Me, you will never go through the fire.”
The promise is, “When you go through it, you will not go through it without Me.”
And if you are standing somewhere today that you never imagined you would be, after genuinely trying to do what was right, maybe you do not need to figure out the entire reason for it yet.
Maybe today your faith looks like one more step.
One more prayer.
One more decision to do what is right.
One more reminder that the fire does not mean God abandoned you.
He is still there.
FROM THE SHORT
Godly obedience does not give us control over what happens next. Sometimes you can make the right decision and still lose something. You can love somebody the correct way and still be misunderstood. You can pray faithfully and still receive an answer you never wanted. You can take care of your body and still become sick. You can forgive and still live with the consequences you did not create. You can follow God and still find yourself standing somewhere you never would have chosen.
And that is where faith gets real.
God never promised that obedience would keep us out of the fire. He promised we would not walk through it alone.
Isaiah 43:2 (KJV)
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
