When Steadiness Starts to Grow
“They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.” — Psalm 112:7
There are some things we go through that we honestly think are going to break us. When we’re right in the middle of one of those seasons, we usually aren’t thinking about how much we’re growing or what God might be teaching us through it. Most of the time, we’re simply trying to make it through whatever is sitting in front of us that day.
Growth can be strange that way because it doesn’t always feel like growth while it’s happening. There may not be one big breakthrough where suddenly everything feels different. Instead, somewhere along the way, our footing begins to change.
Something happens that once would have sent us spiraling, and although it still bothers us, we notice we’re not reacting quite the same way. Fear shows up, but it doesn’t immediately take over. An answer doesn’t come when we wanted it to, but we don’t assume God has forgotten us. The future is still uncertain, but uncertainty doesn’t automatically mean everything is falling apart.
That’s the kind of change I think about when I read Psalm 112:7:
“They will have no fear of bad news; their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord.”
I love that Scripture acknowledges the bad news. The verse doesn’t say a person who trusts God never receives it. There are still hard phone calls, disappointing answers, unexpected changes, losses, setbacks, and situations we cannot control.
The difference is what has begun to happen inside the heart.
Steadfastness is growing.
That doesn’t mean nothing scares us anymore. Trust doesn’t make us emotionless, and faith doesn’t mean we never have a moment when our knees feel weak. A steadfast heart can still hurt, grieve, wonder, and struggle.
It simply has somewhere to return.
After walking with God through enough uncertain places, we begin to remember things we couldn’t always remember before. We’ve seen Him carry us through days we didn’t think we could handle. We’ve prayed prayers without knowing how they would be answered. We’ve waited longer than we wanted to wait and discovered that God was still there while we waited.
None of that means the painful things themselves were good. Some situations really did hurt. Some changed us in ways we never would have chosen, and there are probably places we would never volunteer to walk through again.
But pain doesn’t have to be wasted.
Sometimes the ground that felt like it was swallowing us becomes the same ground where we learn that we can stand.
Maybe that’s why the words “What tried to bury you became the place God taught you how to stand” carry so much weight. They aren’t saying the thing that happened was okay. They’re saying it didn’t get to decide the ending.
God was still there.
Somewhere between the fear and the prayers, the questions and the waiting, our footing began to change. We learned that fear could speak without making every decision. We learned that not knowing what happens next doesn’t mean God has disappeared. We learned that trust is sometimes nothing more dramatic than choosing to put our weight back down on what we already know about Him.
Then one day we notice something.
We’re standing differently.
The situation that once would have completely unraveled us still isn’t easy, but it doesn’t own us anymore. What used to send our minds immediately to the worst possible outcome doesn’t have quite the same grip.
That’s when we begin to see it.
Steadiness has been growing.
Maybe you’re not able to see that in yourself yet. If you’re still in the middle of something hard, you may feel much more like you’re surviving than growing. That’s okay. Growth isn’t always obvious from inside the season where it’s happening.
Just keep coming back to what you know.
God is still God when the answer hasn’t come. He is still faithful when the future isn’t clear, and He is still present when the ground beneath you feels unfamiliar.
One day you may look back at a place you were certain would break you and realize that something else happened there too.
God taught you how to stand.

What tried to bury you became the place God taught you how to stand.
Sometimes growth doesn’t look dramatic. Somewhere along the way, you simply realize that fear doesn’t control you like it used to.
The situation may still be uncertain, but your footing has changed.
