When Things Don’t Work Out

Have you ever prayed about something, genuinely believed God was leading you in a particular direction, and then watched everything turn out completely differently than you expected?

Sometimes what we thought was an answered prayer becomes another problem we don’t know how to solve.

But just because things didn’t work out the way we expected doesn’t mean God is finished working.

Scripture for Reflection

2 Corinthians 5:7 — KJV

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

Ephesians 3:20 — KJV

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,”

When Things Don’t Work Out

Have you ever prayed for an opportunity, a relationship, a new beginning, or a change in your circumstances?

You sought God’s will. You spent time in His Word. You weren’t trying to force your own way. You genuinely wanted to follow where He was leading.

And then things didn’t work out.

In fact, they might have gotten worse.

Suddenly, what you thought was an answered prayer became another problem you didn’t know how to solve.

That can be incredibly disheartening, especially when you’re trying your best to live faithfully.

But here’s something worth considering:

Just because something didn’t work out the way you thought it should doesn’t mean God has finished working.

When the Problem Becomes All We See

We often approach our circumstances by immediately identifying everything that has gone wrong.

We see the disappointment, the wasted effort, the unexpected obstacles, and everything that didn’t happen according to our plans.

Before long, the problem becomes the only thing we can see.

But 2 Corinthians 5:7 reminds us that we walk by faith, not by sight.

Faith doesn’t require us to pretend a situation isn’t difficult. It doesn’t mean ignoring mistakes, avoiding responsibility, or insisting every setback was sent by God.

It means understanding that what we can see today isn’t necessarily the entirety of what God can accomplish through tomorrow.

Sometimes an unexpected obstacle forces us to reconsider our direction. Sometimes disappointment teaches us something we wouldn’t have learned otherwise. Sometimes a closed door encourages us to recognize an opportunity we hadn’t previously considered.

And sometimes we simply have to keep walking, trusting God while the possibilities are still unclear.

Changing the Questions We Ask

Ephesians 3:20 reminds us that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.

We can become so attached to how we imagined things should work out that we struggle to recognize possibilities when they arrive looking different than we expected.

What if we changed the questions we asked ourselves?

Instead of only asking, “Why did this happen?” perhaps we could also ask, “What can I learn from this?”

Instead of focusing entirely on what didn’t work, what if we considered what might still be possible?

Instead of allowing our disappointments to convince us that nothing good can come from a situation, what if we continued seeking God’s direction with an open heart?

Finding Possibilities Through Faith

If we genuinely desire God’s will above our own, we must also be willing to accept that His direction may look different from the outcome we originally imagined.

We may need to change course, adjust our expectations, try something different, or acknowledge that we misunderstood something along the way.

None of those things mean we have to stop walking in faith.

Even in disappointing circumstances, there may still be something to learn, something to change, someone to help, or another direction worth prayerfully exploring.

Our responsibility isn’t to have every outcome figured out.

It’s to keep seeking God, remaining faithful to His Word, exercising wisdom, and being willing to move when He leads.

Maybe it’s time we spent a little less energy identifying everything that went wrong and a little more time prayerfully considering what might still be possible.

After all, we walk by faith, not by sight.

And we serve a God who is able to do far more than we could ever ask or imagine.

Something to Carry With You

Don’t let what didn’t work out convince you that nothing else can.

Sometimes our greatest opportunities for growth begin when we stop measuring what is possible by what has already gone wrong.

Keep seeking. Keep learning. Keep trusting God.

The problem may be what you see today, but it doesn’t have to be the only thing you see tomorrow.
