When Life Forgot the Instruction Manual

There are seasons of life when we would really appreciate a few more instructions.

Not necessarily a twenty-year plan. At this point, some of us would settle for knowing what we are supposed to do by Tuesday.

Plans change. Doors close. Opportunities appear that we never expected. Things we thought were settled suddenly are not. Sometimes we pray for direction, and instead of receiving the entire roadmap, we simply have enough light to take the next step.

That can be frustrating, especially when we are trying to make good decisions and genuinely want to follow God.

But perhaps faithfulness was never supposed to depend on knowing everything ahead of time.

Scripture

“The Lord directs our steps, so we will not always understand the path we are on.”
Proverbs 20:24

There is something strangely comforting about that verse.

It reminds us that not understanding everything does not automatically mean we are doing something wrong. There will be moments when we cannot see how today’s circumstances fit into tomorrow’s story.

Our responsibility is not to predict every turn in the road.

Sometimes our responsibility is simply to be faithful with what God has placed in front of us right now.

Take care of what needs taking care of.

Make the decision you can make.

Do the good that is available to you.

Treat people well.

Keep your word.

Pray for wisdom.

Take the next step.

And when tomorrow changes the plan again, bring tomorrow to God too.

Faithfulness in the Ordinary

That is one of the beautiful truths reflected throughout the Book of Ruth.

Ruth could not see the entire story ahead of her. Much of what eventually became significant began with very ordinary acts of faithfulness—staying, working, providing, listening, and continuing forward through circumstances she never would have chosen.

What looked ordinary in one moment became part of something much larger.

Our lives can be like that too.

We may not recognize the importance of today’s small decisions while we are making them. The conversation, the responsibility, the unexpected opportunity, the season of waiting, or even the change of plans that currently feels inconvenient may eventually look very different when we see it from farther down the road.

So this prayer is for anyone living somewhere between:

“I trust God.”

and

“I have absolutely no idea what happens next.”

Apparently, those two things can exist at the same time.

A Prayer for the Unplanned Plan

Lord,

I know life doesn’t usually come with step-by-step instructions, and most days I’m doing well just figuring out the next five minutes.

So help me focus on what You’ve actually placed in front of me.

Give me wisdom for today, courage for the next step, and patience when I can’t see very far ahead.

Keep me faithful in the small things, especially the ones that don’t seem important yet.

And when my plans change—and they probably will—help me trust that You can still lead me somewhere good.

Amen.

Just Take the Next Step

If you are in a season where the road ahead feels uncertain, you do not have to figure out your entire future tonight.

Ask God for wisdom.

Pay attention to what is in front of you.

Be faithful there.

Then take the next step.

When plans change and the road ahead is unclear, faith may simply mean trusting God with the next step.
