Control does not always look like somebody trying to run everything.

Control does not always look like somebody trying to run everything. Sometimes it looks like thinking through every possible outcome before making a decision, replaying conversations, checking things one more time, or trying to stay a few steps ahead because somewhere along the way you learned that being caught off guard could hurt.

That is part of what makes control so tricky. It can feel responsible. It can even feel wise. If I can anticipate the problem, maybe I can prevent it. If I prepare enough, maybe nothing will fall apart. If I keep everything organized and pay close attention, maybe I can protect myself from being blindsided again.

The problem is that eventually you can start carrying responsibility for things you were never actually given the power to control.

There is a difference between being responsible and trying to control the outcome. Responsibility asks, What is mine to do here? Control asks, How do I make sure nothing goes wrong? Those questions can sound similar at first, but they lead us in very different directions.

There are absolutely things God expects us to handle. We make decisions, prepare, speak up when something needs to be said, set boundaries, and take care of what has been entrusted to us. None of that is wrong. The problem comes when preparation starts being driven by fear and responsibility quietly turns into trying to manage everything around us.

That is exhausting.

Second Timothy 1:7 says that God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. I think part of having a sound mind is being able to recognize when fear has started disguising itself as control.

A sound mind does not mean you never plan or think ahead. It does not mean you stop caring about what happens. It simply means your peace is not completely dependent on everything going according to plan. You can make a wise decision without knowing exactly how it will turn out. You can do what is right without being able to control how someone else responds, and you can prepare for tomorrow without trying to carry tomorrow before it gets here.

Sometimes I think we hold onto control because letting go feels irresponsible. We tell ourselves that if we stop watching everything so closely, something will go wrong. Maybe it will. Life is unpredictable, and surrender does not come with a guarantee that nothing difficult will happen.

But control does not give us that guarantee either.

It just gives us the illusion that if we think hard enough, prepare enough, or carry enough, we can somehow keep every painful thing from reaching us.

At some point, we have to ask whether the thing we are holding onto for safety is actually becoming part of the weight that is wearing us down.

Maybe the better question is not, How do I make sure this works out? Maybe it is, What is mine to do faithfully right now?

Do that part. Say what needs to be said. Make the decision that needs to be made. Prepare where preparation is wise. Set the boundary if one is needed. Then leave room for God to handle what happens next.

That is not giving up. It is learning the difference between responsibility and control.

Sometimes peace begins when we finally realize that everything does not depend on us.

2 Timothy 1:7 KJV
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

I think this version fits your WordPress voice much better. It still has a few short emphasis sentences, but they are used sparingly instead of turning the whole devotion into stacked lines.
