It would be nice if every breakthrough came with fireworks, but they do not.
Some of the clearest evidence of growth is that you are not falling apart the way you used to.
We usually measure progress by what we can see. We look for the open door, the answered prayer, the problem finally getting resolved, or at least some obvious sign that things are moving in the right direction. When none of that happens, it is easy to assume we are stuck.
But sometimes the change is harder to see because it is happening in us before it happens around us.
Think about something that would have completely overwhelmed you six months ago. Maybe it still bothers you. Maybe you still wish the situation were different. But you are handling it differently now. You are a little steadier, finding your footing faster, and learning that you do not have to understand everything before you can trust God.
It would be nice if every breakthrough came with fireworks, but they do not.
Sometimes breakthrough is much quieter than that. It looks like taking a hard day without immediately deciding everything is falling apart. It looks like catching yourself before you spiral quite as far. It looks like praying, thinking, waiting, or simply getting back up a little faster than you used to.
That kind of growth can be easy to miss because we tend to keep our eyes on the thing we still want God to change. We are watching the door that has not opened yet, the answer that has not come, or the situation that still looks frustratingly familiar. Meanwhile, God may be doing something in us that we would have never noticed if everything had changed immediately.
James 1 talks about the testing of our faith producing patience and allowing that patience to finish its work. That is not always the kind of answer we want when we are waiting. Most of us would probably prefer the quick breakthrough first and the character development afterward.
But growth usually happens in the middle of something.
It happens while we are learning how to trust God without having every answer. It happens when we discover that disappointment does not have to destroy our peace. It happens when the same kind of pressure shows up again, and this time it does not have quite the same power over us.
That does not mean the situation no longer matters. It does not mean you should stop praying for change or pretend you are perfectly content with something that is genuinely difficult.
It simply means you should not overlook what God has already been doing in you while you wait.
Your world around you may still look the same.
But you do not.
And that is growth, even if nobody else can see it yet.
James 1:3–4
When your faith is tested, it builds endurance. Let that endurance keep doing its work in you, because God can use it to make you stronger, steadier, and more complete.
