Eventually, something becomes clear: life is not only being survived anymore. It is finally being lived.
When life has been hard for a long time, waiting for the next bad thing can become a habit. Even during a good day, part of the mind may still be watching for what could go wrong, which can make quiet seasons feel suspicious and peace seem temporary.
After a while, being prepared starts to feel normal. We prepare for disappointment, another problem, or the possibility of having to hold everything together one more time, and eventually that kind of thinking can become so familiar that we barely notice it.
Healing and growth can slowly change that.
At some point, the next bad thing does not take up quite as much space in the mind. Laughter comes without guilt, a good moment can stay good without immediately wondering how it might fall apart, and a peaceful day can simply be enjoyed for what it is.
Calm no longer feels like the warning before a storm, and for someone who has spent a long time surviving, that is a bigger change than it may seem.
Sometimes peace itself has to become familiar again.
A difficult season can teach the heart to stay alert even when nothing is wrong. So much energy gets spent preparing for what might happen next that enjoying what is already good can become difficult.
Healing does not mean pretending hard things will never happen again. It is learning that every calm moment does not need a warning attached to it, and yesterday being hard does not mean today has to be treated with suspicion.
Life will still have difficult days. Plans can change, disappointment can come, and circumstances will not always work out the way we hoped, but every good day does not have to be spent preparing for the next hard one.
Over time, trust begins to take the place of some of that fear. A quiet confidence starts to grow that says, “If something changes, I will deal with it when it comes.”
That kind of trust does not come from knowing exactly what the future holds. It comes from remembering that God has already carried us through things we once thought we could not handle, and that memory changes the way we face what has not happened yet.
Faith can begin to look different after a hard season. Instead of only asking God to keep anything difficult from happening, we begin trusting that whatever comes, we will not walk through it alone.
Trouble does not have to be borrowed from tomorrow, which means today can simply be today.
There is something freeing about being able to laugh without wondering what will ruin it, enjoy something without immediately preparing to lose it, or rest without feeling guilty for being still. A peaceful moment can remain peaceful without needing to be questioned.
Maybe that is one of the quieter signs that something inside is healing. The need to brace all the time starts to loosen, preparing for the worst becomes less automatic, and peace begins to feel less like something temporary.
Eventually, something becomes clear: life is not only being survived anymore. It is finally being lived.
Scripture
Psalm 27:13
“I would have given up if I had not believed that I would still see God’s goodness in this life.”
That verse carries so much hope because it does not deny that life can be hard. It reminds us that hardship is not the only thing ahead, and difficult seasons do not get the final word.
Goodness can still be seen, peaceful days can still be received, and there are still moments worth enjoying.
There is still life to be lived.
Today is allowed to be good.
