Show Me

I wrote “Show Me” from that place where you have already prayed, thought everything through, tried to fix what you could, and you are still sitting there wondering what God wants you to do next.

Sometimes the hardest part is not even the problem itself. It is not knowing whether you are supposed to keep holding on, finally let go, stay where you are, or move in a completely different direction.

That kind of uncertainty can wear you down after a while, and eventually almost any decision can start to feel better than no decision at all. That is really where this song came from.

I wanted it to sound like a prayer from someone who is trying very hard not to let frustration, fear, or exhaustion make a choice that should be made with wisdom.

The Heart Behind the Song

One of the lines that probably says it best for me is:

“Keep emotion from deciding
what only wisdom ought to choose.”

I think that can be one of the hardest things to do when you have been carrying something for a long time.

When you are tired, everything can start to feel urgent, and sometimes you want an answer simply because you are exhausted from wondering. But I am learning that desperately wanting direction is not always the same thing as actually having direction.

While I was writing this, I kept thinking about Psalm 119:105:

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”

A lamp does not necessarily show you everything waiting ten miles ahead. It gives you enough light to see where you are standing and where to place your foot next.

That became one of the biggest ideas behind this song.

I realized I do not really need God to show me the next ten miles. As much as I would probably appreciate a detailed map, a schedule, a few warning signs, and maybe some highlighted instructions along the way, sometimes all I really need is enough light to know what the next faithful step looks like.

That is also why Isaiah 30:21 means so much here:

“This is the way; walk in it.”

That is really what I am asking for in “Show Me.”

Not a complete explanation of everything that is going to happen, but enough clarity to know that the direction I am taking is coming from God and not simply from my own impatience.

If He wants me to stay, then I am asking Him for the strength to stay. If He is telling me to move, then I am asking Him to make that direction clear enough that I can move without constantly second-guessing myself.

Either way, I would rather wait for His wisdom than run ahead simply because standing still has become uncomfortable.

For the Season of Waiting

Maybe you are in one of those seasons too.

You may have done everything you know to do and still have no idea what comes next. If that is where you are, I hope this song reminds you that you do not have to figure out the entire road tonight.

Sometimes faith looks a lot less like having all the answers and a lot more like saying, “God, just show me the next step. I will trust You with the rest.”

That is really where I wanted the song to end, because eventually there comes a point when we have to release what we cannot control and trust God with what we cannot see.

“I’ve done what I know to do.
The rest belongs to You.”

If “Show Me” meets you somewhere in your own season of waiting, deciding, letting go, or trying to hear God clearly, I hope it gives you a little room to stop forcing the whole future to make sense and simply ask Him for enough light for today.
