A Prayer for Letting Go of Control
Sometimes control does not really come from wanting to be in charge. Sometimes it comes from being hurt enough times that you learn to stay ahead of everything, especially when you love someone who struggles with addiction, trauma, instability, or old wounds that still shape the way they live.
You start learning their moods and noticing the change in their voice. You can usually tell when something is wrong before they ever say it, so without really meaning to, you begin preparing for problems before they happen. You try to keep the peace, watch for triggers, fix what you can, and do your best to prevent the next crisis before it gets there.
After a while, being prepared can start to feel a lot like being safe.
The hard part is that sometimes your effort really has helped. Maybe you did keep something from getting worse. Maybe you were the steady one when everything else felt unpredictable. When that happens often enough, it becomes easy to believe that if you stop holding everything together, everything might fall apart.
That is where caring can quietly turn into carrying.
You can love someone so much that their emotions begin to affect the entire atmosphere around you. Their bad day becomes something you feel responsible for fixing, their choices become something you replay in your mind, and their struggle slowly starts to feel like your assignment. Before long, you are carrying a weight God never actually asked you to carry.
That does not mean you stop loving them or become cold and unconcerned. It simply means learning that loving someone and being responsible for them are not always the same thing.
Second Timothy 1:7 tells us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind. I think part of having a sound mind is being able to step back long enough to ask, What is actually mine to do here?
Maybe I can support them without making their decisions. I can pray for them without trying to control what happens next. I can be present without believing I have the power to heal something only God can reach, and I can love them deeply without convincing myself that everything depends on me.
That can be difficult when control has become a way of protecting yourself. Letting go does not always feel peaceful at first. Sometimes it feels irresponsible, because your mind immediately starts asking, What if something happens? What if they make the wrong choice? What if I could have prevented it?
But eventually, we have to remember that God was already God before we started trying to manage every outcome.
There may still be conversations that need to happen, boundaries that need to be set, responsibilities that truly belong to us, and people God has absolutely called us to love well. But He never asked us to become someone else’s savior.
Sometimes trust looks like loosening your grip just enough to let God work in places you were never capable of reaching anyway.
A sound mind is not caring less. It is learning what belongs to you, what belongs to them, and what belongs to God.
Scripture
2 Timothy 1:7 KJV
“For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”
Prayer
God, sometimes I tell myself I am just being careful, when really I am trying to control everything because I am afraid of what might happen if I let go.
I am tired of carrying things You never asked me to carry.
Help me loosen my grip. Quiet the fear that tells me everything depends on me, and give me the sound mind You promised.
Show me what is mine to do, and help me trust You with everything that is not.
I do not need to know every outcome. I just need enough faith to take the next step with You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
