September 11 is a day we remember because forgetting would be too easy.

We remember the people who went to work that morning and never came home. We remember families whose lives changed in a matter of minutes. We remember first responders who ran toward danger while everyone else was trying to escape it. And we remember what it felt like for an entire nation to suddenly realize that the peace and security we had grown accustomed to were never guaranteed.

Remembering does not mean living afraid.

In fact, Scripture points us in another direction.

Paul tells us in 1 Timothy 2:1–2 to pray for those in authority so that we may live quiet and peaceful lives. That means praying for leaders even when we disagree with them. It means praying for military members, first responders, law enforcement, intelligence personnel, and countless others whose decisions and sacrifices affect people they may never meet.

It also means recognizing that peace is something worth thanking God for.

Most days we wake up, go to work, take our children to school, attend church, make plans, and live our lives without thinking very much about national security. That ordinary freedom can feel so normal that we forget how precious it actually is.

September 11 reminds us.

But remembrance should not leave us trapped in fear. Fear may find us. History has shown that it can. It does not have to take hold.

We can remember what happened and still move forward with courage. We can honor those we lost while praying for those protecting us today. We can ask God to give wisdom to our leaders without pretending that any government or human institution is ultimately where our security comes from.

So today we remember.

And we pray.
