It Stops With Me

“It Stops With Me” came from thinking about the things we can inherit from a family that never show up in a photograph.

Fear, addiction, anger, silence, broken relationships, survival responses, and ways of handling pain can all be passed down, sometimes beginning long before we were born.

Some of those patterns can travel through generations until they become so familiar that nobody even thinks to question them anymore.

This song is personal for me because I know what it is like to look back and realize that some of what reached my life started long before I did. I can understand where it came from without pretending it did not hurt, and I can have compassion for the people who carried it before me without believing that I have to carry it forward.

The Heart Behind the Song

That is what this line means to me:

“I can’t rewrite the beginning,
but I can turn the page.”

I cannot change where the story started, and I cannot repair every decision made by the generations before me. But with God, I can decide what continues through my life and what ends here.

I also do not believe that kind of change happens through willpower alone.

There are chains God has had to show me before I could even recognize that I was carrying them, and there are places where He was teaching me to stand long before I understood why I would need the strength.

When fear or the past starts speaking again, I keep coming back to the promise of a sound mind.

This song is not about blaming the people behind me. It is about taking responsibility for what goes forward.

The past may explain where I have been, but it does not get to decide who I will become.

Some things have traveled far enough, and some patterns do not need another generation.

“These chains end with me.
It stops with me.”
